«The time is over when women who cared about the world’s social and political life were thought of as ridiculous and manly. We used to believe that women were only born to darn their husband’s socks and pray. We now know that tears and prayers are utterly useless. Tears give us headaches and religion makes us dumb, superstitious and ignorant. We also believed that our only mission in life was to hunt for a husband, and since we were children we had been raised just for that sake; we could not read but that did not matter as long as we knew how to groom. Today we know that women’s worth is so much more than mending old clothes, being bed mates and beating one’s chest. Women are as worthy as men for political and social life. We know that because many our sisters have suffered persecutions and exile. What I mean by this is that, since men are fighting for an emancipation that will equally benefit us all, it is only fair we help them; it is only fair we shape our own destiny». Luisa Carnés  (1905-1964)
